Resurfacing fixes the surface, never the ground under it
Concrete resurfacing in Winter Haven means bonding a new cement-based layer over the slab you already have. It covers stains, worn paste, shallow pits, hairline crazing and a dated color, and it can add texture, a stamped pattern or a grippier surface on a patio or walk. It can't fix what is under the slab. Concrete Network puts it plainly: the old concrete must be sound, resurfacing heaving or badly cracked concrete is not feasible, and an overlay will not solve soil problems.
So every concrete resurfacing job in Winter Haven starts with a yes or no on the slab. If one side of a crack sits higher than the other, if a panel has dropped, or if an oak root is lifting it, an overlay just copies the problem in a new color. Those slabs get repaired or replaced. The resurfacing vs replacement guide covers that call, and for a full tear-out and repour, see our concrete driveway page.
Resurface, repair or replace: reading your slab
| What you see | What it points to | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline cracks, flat on both sides | Shrinkage, surface only | Fill, then overlay |
| Cracks up to about 1/4 inch, no step | Not structural, as a rule | Repair the crack first, then overlay |
| Wider cracks, or one side higher | Settlement, roots or a washout below | Find the cause; lift or replace the section |
| Sunken panel at the garage or walk | Poorly compacted fill or erosion | Lift the slab, or replace it |
| Spalling, pits, oil stains, faded color | Worn surface on a sound slab | Overlay candidate |
| Old paint or sealer peeling | Coating failure, not concrete failure | Strip it, then overlay |
The quarter-inch line comes from Concrete Network driveway repair guidance: cracks or holes under 1/4 inch are patch-and-fill work, while larger ones can point to a bigger problem and call for a closer look. Ask yourself two things. Are roots growing under the slab? Is a leaking pipe washing sand out from below? If either is true, the driveway may need replacing. Spalling and discoloration are what an overlay is for.
Before we visit, lay a level across each crack to see if one side steps up, and note which cracks have grown.

Concrete resurfacing in Winter Haven: spray-texture, microtopping and stamped overlays compared
Three overlay systems cover the concrete resurfacing we do in Winter Haven on driveways, patios, walks and garage aprons.
Spray-texture (knockdown). Sprayed on with a hopper gun, then left as an orange-peel texture or knocked down with a trowel. Spray-down toppings carry more sand than a microtopping, so the finish is grittier and slip resistant, and Concrete Network lists patios among their main uses. Paper or tape stencils turn them into tile, border and diamond patterns. Price: $3 to $7 per sq ft.
Microtopping or skim coat. A thin, smooth cement coat applied by trowel or squeegee. It gives a clean, modern look on a patio or walk. Price: $3 to $7 per sq ft.
Stamped overlay. A thicker polymer-modified cement layer, typically 1/4 to 3/4 inch, that takes a stamp mat like fresh concrete. Concrete Network notes the depth is set by the pattern, and that big-box resurfacers are thin cosmetic products not meant to take a stamp. Price: $7 to $15 per sq ft. If you want the full stamped look on new concrete instead, see our stamped concrete page.
We seal every concrete overlay at the end, and the sealer needs renewing every few years.
